We've installed several patio covers at residences adjacent to a golf course. Not only does the patio cover provide shade, but adds as buffer for those stray golf balls! It saves on replacing broken glass.
Customers who are not fond of downspouts, can consider an attractive rain chain as an alternative.
We've had many years of experience designing and building wood patio covers in the Lodi and Stockton areas. When we thought about Redding's climate we recommend aluminum. It can be more expensive than wood (depending on the grade or quality of lumber used), but the benefits of an aluminium patio cover far outweighed the possible difference in price.

Questions come up about permits.
According to the California Building Code, no building or structure shall be erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved, improved, removed, converted or demolished unless a separate permit for each building or structure has first been obtained from the building official.
Code requirements vary in different cities and counties around the state. Check with your local building department to find out what's needed in your area. You may want to check city, county and/or town if necessary. See below for links to those agencies.
